Energy Efficiency
Energy Efficiency is all around us, yet we tend not to take the potential savings seriously. Somehow we think that it's more trouble than it's worth. But in this day and age, with energy prices rising faster than almost anything, even a mild campaign to improve your home's energy efficiency will reap dividends
The place to start is with a little research. The main areas you can quickly impact are:
-
The lights - replace incandescent and old bulbs with compact fluorescent, avoid Halogen Torchieres,
-
The hot water heater - Wrap it with a heat-saving blanket
-
The windows - caulk and seal around them, replace with double-pane units.
-
The attic - add insulation in thinner areas.
-
How you use your appliances - run the clothes washer on cold setting, etc.
For good information on practical solutions go to Home Depot's Energy savings page.
Energy Star offers good information on "home sealing" which includes the windows and attic.
One other excellent resource is the Dept. Of Energy's energy efficiency website.
